She was wearing a button-up shirt, a gray vest, and black trousers despite the sweltering heat outside. “I’m afraid not,” the barista said apologetically. “It was seasonal. We’ve got a delicious hazelnut latte though, if you would like to try. It’s my personal favorite.” The young woman looked pained for a moment. Her already sharp jaw hardened and she squinted at the barista, before giving a jerky nod of her head. The barista smiled and turned away to make the drink, and the young woman loped over to a nearby table and settled down in a chair. She kept her back stiff and upright as she sat, tapping her fingers anxiously against the tabletop.

It reminded me of where Laila and I first met. “What can i get you?” I turned to the male barista who had come up to me with a tray tucked under his arms. He has short black hair which was neatly trimmed, black eyes and tanned skin that blended with the yellow lights. “Uhm- I’ll have the best thing here.” I said glancing down at the menu tucked on the table. “Everything here is great, unless you’re going to pay for all of it then i can sart making it ready for you.” he said, i eyed the name tag on his uniform, Aiden.

Girls did seem to follow him around. "You look good, what's new?" He asked, and I just shrugged. "Not much, grab some coffee, and we'll catch up." I gestured, and he smiled, heading to the counter. After a few minutes, he returned to the table with a large coffee mug. He sat down and took off his old flannel. "What did you order?" I asked. "Where's your usual black drip coffee?" "They're still serving it." I shrugged and looked up to see the barista struggling with the espresso machine. "No big deal, I just didn't want something hot."

A sharp contrast to the cold suspicion outside. I walked to the counter. “Hi… um, do you have a hot Americano?” I asked. The barista, an older lady, smiled at me. “We do. Would that be all?” “Yeah,” I said, still glancing around the quiet café. Not many people were here. She nodded and started making the coffee. Then she looked up at me, her eyes sharp. “You’re the new face asking about Blackthorn Lane,” she said casually. I froze.

TWO YEARS AFTER… “One hot caramel macchiato. Thanks.” I ordered a hot cup in a cold winter’s morning. It was freezing cold outside and even one cup can’t make you feel any better. I didn’t have any good sleep last night since the talk I had with Thea. It didn’t put me to rest and it still bothers me now. Though I expected for such things to happen in meeting her, I just didn’t expect it to become that terrible. “Name sir?” The barista asks. “Benedict.” A woman’s voice comes from behind me as she answers the barista’s question. She rest her wrist on my shoulder and looked back at me with a glowing face.

The Café turning into a noisy hive. Behind the barista counter, my best friend Kya and I stood, frozen. "Damn," Kya managed. I watched her swallow her through my peripheral vision. "He's freaking hot!" I couldn't agree more. "Hello, girls," he drawled in an accent I couldn't quite place immediately back then. "One cappuccino, strawberry-flavored with foam, please." "Y-Y-Yes..."

I even thought of leaving, and it wasn't even the first time that I had that thought. "Here's your drink, sir," the bartender said. I grabbed the glass he had given me and drank it right away, not giving a shit about how it hurt my throat a little. Once I finished my drink, I put the glass back on the counter together with my payment for the drinks, as well as the bartender's tip, and then I stood and walked away from the counter. Three glasses were enough if I wanted to finish what I had planned before coming here. I only need the drink to gain confidence, not to be drunk.

I wrote down what was requested. "Two cheesecakes and two strawberry smoothies." I reread the order and smile at the customer. "Anything else needed?" "It was then." I nodded. Take the menu book and bring it to the back. Oh yeah, I haven't introduced our barista, his name is Nick. He is about 25 years old.
