Havermouth, Four and a Half Years Before ** Trigger warning – this chapter features pregnancy loss. ** In the quiet, Aislen could hear the small settling movement of the house, the draft where old joins met imperfectly, the creak of boards, and the groan of joists. There was the buzz of the refrigerator in the kitchen, and the drip of water into the sink, the tick of a small insect body hitting glass as a blowfly trapped indoors sought freedom.

I stopped and moved my head a little, straining on my tiptoes to see if what I thought I was looking at really was a house. It was, but it was an odd house. At least, from this angle, it looked different than any house I’d ever seen. It was a two-story house, but it wasn’t straight, and it’s dark exterior looked almost black. The feeling I’d had that this part of the woods wasn’t right carried over to the house, and a sinister feeling overcame me.

Just my husband. "Is it over?" Bryan asked, looking at the house. "I think so," I said. But then I felt a weight in my pocket. I reached in and pulled out a small, leather-bound book.
