Day three. The first workday under the new rules. By seven-thirty that morning, the department was already a mess when I walked in. "Dr. Altman, the OR called. Anesthesia's ready for the first case, but the attending surgeon still isn't here." "Who's the attending?" "Dr. Lowe." I checked the wall clock. 7:35. The surgical board listed a 7:40 start. "Where is he?" The nurse lowered her voice. "In his office. Says his back hurts too much to operate today."

My first day at work didn’t go at all how I imagined. I had pictured a fresh start, maybe a new chance to put my past behind me and move forward with something meaningful. But life had other plans. Too many things were uncovered—secrets I hadn’t prepared myself for. Wounds I thought were long buried were suddenly ripped open without warning. And in the chaos of it all, I came to realize something painfully raw: maybe life isn’t about having everything, or being everything... maybe it’s just about having that one person—just one—you can fully trust and rely on without fear. Someone whose presence makes the storm bearable.

"Where do we begin?" I knew I shouldn't be entertaining her, but I was too curious for my own good to walk away. And the thing about curiosity? It killed the cat. "The start is always a good idea," I murmured. "Right. It all started twenty-four years ago. I was out of a job and barely had anything to eat, and I was pregnant at the same time. The child's father had vanished after a bunch of empty promises, and I had no one left to turn to."

“From the beginning. I want to hear it all.” I took a shaky breath. “It started at the mall. I was trying on dresses for my Awakening party. Nothing fit. The zipper broke on one, next Thorn and Ryan burst in. They recorded me while being stuck in the dress, and crying. They laughed, posted it and everyone saw.” Jacob stayed silent, listening.

“He started it…” “Oh, if we’re going to do that then I have one person who started ALL this and is the reason you’re going through all this bullshit” Grace said making me frown in confusion. She sighed and put her hand on my knee “look, what I’m going to say might upset you but it’s the reality of things”

Because the truth had finally come out and it had destroyed everything. All of this…All of it…Started because I was searching for love. And now— I wasn’t even sure what I had left.
