“So,” I said, my voice low in her ear. “The one with the best hand wins.”
I picked up the deck and shuffled the cards. Mabel watched, her eyes following my hands. I dealt two cards face down to each of us. “This is the pot. You put your money, or in this case, a chip, in the pot.” I gestured to the pile in the middle. “Then you can either bet, call, or fold.”
She watched a few rounds while I explained what was happening. When she understood what a straight, a full house, and a pair were, we joined the game. I held the cards for us. She would tell me what to do.
