The elevator opened, and as we walked out, all I could see was Megan sitting on the floor by her door, sobbing her eyes out. “Megan!” Marley yelled, rushing to where she sat, “What happened? Did you lock yourself out? What is going on?” Megan shrugged off her hand, reaching out to me. Her eyes were distraught as she stared at my face. I wrapped my hand around her, making sure that she was close to me. “What is going on?” I asked. She whimpered. “My dress, the one that I had gotten for the hockey dinner, we.... Maggie tried again to send a message to Dakari and she could hear that wonderful static that told her he was at least receiving her message. She heard nothing back but a speck of blue pushed out of one of the rocks. A little girl, hardly bigger than a werekitten, stood on the rocks now. She had two braids, and a very dirty face, smudged with tears and no shoes. She was looking behind her as a very thin Dakari climbed out behind her. Maggie roared with pleasure. She hadn’t meant to, but the sight of her brother overjoyed her.

Her stomach rumbled and her steps up to her third floor apartment were labored. She stopped when she reached her floor. She cocked her head. Her door looked to be ajar. She'd locked it this morning. All three locks she had on her door had been secure when she left this morning.

Maggie felt Eldan jerk her back by her collar. The arrow flew past her right into the eye of one of the slaves. “What is wrong with you?!” He asked. “Do you want to get yourself killed?” It was the first time he showed his anger and Maggie was slightly taken aback by the feral look on his face. She hadn’t thought she could get killed since they were just a mirage in this past world but now that she thought of it the fact that she could feel the stone seat beneath her bum was a tiny indication.
