I dropped the axe, chest heaving, and looked up at the sky, as if I’d find some sort of answer there.
“Fuck!” The word ripped out of me, ragged, breaking through the silence. I ran my hands through my hair, pulling hard. My gaze moved back to the house, my feet moving almost on their own.
Scout was curled up by the door, watching me with that sad, knowing look he always got when I was a mess. “Do you think I’m the bad guy, Scout?” I whispered, scratching behind his ear, but all he did was give a low whine.
