After a long pause, a cool and hesitant voice sounded above my head. “Honey?” I looked up at her with the most determined, affectionate expression I could muster. “Yeah. I’m your husband. You got hurt saving me and fell into a coma. If you can’t remember, that’s okay. I’ll tell you everything, little by little.” Gathering my courage, I hooked my finger around hers. My voice trembled slightly as I said, “There are zombies everywhere outside right now. Honey, you’ll protect me, right?” Ruth stared at me for several seconds. Her brows knitted together as if she were desperately trying to search through the chaos in her mind for any trace of me.

He averted his eyes on my face once more, his smile completely faded. "NO FUCKING WAY! Don't tell me that zombies are real too!" UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE! I started to hyperventilate! Witches, I can handle, werewolves, ok I can also handle, but not motherfucking zombies - I hate zombies, even the nice ones like Liv from The series I-zombie. They just creep me the heck out! My mind went into a downward spiral, thinking up ways to survive a crazy, zombie apocalypse.

I slowly open my eyes and see all the zombies on the floor dead and see my hero Reed standing on the zombies with a knife in his hand. That is what I wish to say. Instead, I see all zombies on the floor rolling and laughing.

*Zombie* I bolt out of the old school like a bat out of hell, the door slamming behind me with a thud that echoes in the stillness of the night. My heart pounds in my chest, each beat a frantic reminder of the chaos I just left behind. I can still hear Amber’s voice, the confusion and fear lacing her words as I sprint down the hallway, a wild frenzy coursing through my veins. Adis. The name reverberates in my mind like a drum, but it can’t be true. Adis is dead. He’s gone. I’m Zombie.

I whirl around, eyes narrowing. Lucas steps back, pulling me with him. He can see in the dark and sees the zombie staggering forward before I do.

“Like fuck it is. At least not on your own.” I shot him a grin. “Fine, old man. Let’s see how many you get this time, when it’s an even playing field.” “More than you, guaranteed, pipsqueak.” I ignored that. I’d prove him wrong…and besides, we had a line of zombies bearing down on us, dozens of them, moaning and dragging their half-rotted feet along through the snow, their jaws wide and full of filthy teeth. The sun broke the horizon, gilding bare, maggoty scalps and showing details that I — yeah, I could’ve lived forever without seeing some of what I was seeing.

"Pause nothing! My daughter is missing—five days now! She's never suffered a day in her life. Move Claire to the backup room immediately and begin the third extraction!" Father's fury silenced him. The doctor barked orders to two assistants, who hauled me from the cold metal chair. As they half-carried me down the hallway, my consciousness spiraled into blackness. Icy water seemed to rise around me. I screamed, "Help me!" but no sound escaped. Each breath became a struggle. The last thing I heard was the slam of the backup room door, then fading footsteps. As life slipped away, I found myself utterly alone, accompanied by nothing but the endless darkness. It felt just like—death.
