“What are you?” He went still. Dead still. Then he smiled, this time calm, chilling, ancient. “I am the king who never died.” The air froze. My heart was hammered. “And you…”.He pointed one shaking finger at me. “…are the queen who have not yet risen.” My throat closed. I stepped back. He watched hungrily. “You fear what you are becoming.” “No,” I said. “I fear what you want me to become.” “Ah.” His smile sharpened.

“Do not treat me or speak about me like I am some property to be owned! I will not let you dictate my life, married or not.” “I will make any call I see fit for your safety and what is in your best interest, with or without your permission, love. I won’t ask for forgiveness or permission. That is not in my make-up. I am King. It is my right.” Hell to the fucking no! He did not just pull the I am King card! I’ve had enough of his bullshit.

“And, I’m a king.” My eyes widened at that, my body stilling. A king. My eyes traveled over his body yet again, trailing over his prudent physique, the way his face was still painted, and suddenly, I could see it. But then… would that mean I would become a queen? I cleared my throat, trying to collect myself yet again. “King of what?” I asked, trying to sound like it didn’t affect me, like it didn’t matter to me. “I’m the King of Summer, I command the Kingdom of Summer,” he said, spreading his arms, “I rule over everything you see, and more,” he added, shooting me a wink.

It’s better than safety. It’s control. He is the King of the city. But I am the Kingmaker. And he doesn't even know it.
