He said worriedly. I knew there would be no point trying to talk him out of this one. "Where were you coming from that late by the way?" I did not see the question coming. “I lied.” Her sobs faltered as she froze, her breath hitching. “There was never a time I would have left my mate for you. And deep down, you knew it,” I continued, my tone sharp as a blade. “You were just too greedy, too ambitious, too selfish to see the truth. Maybe there was a fleeting moment I considered it, but when I realized it wouldn’t work, I didn’t string you along. I let you go. I told you the truth.”

My eyes widen, shock registering on my face. "What?”, I breathe, disbelief mingled with hurt burning in my voice. My lips tremble as I turn to face him. He sighs heavily, and I can almost see his eyes tearing up too. His eyes drop to his fidgeting hands as guilt consumes him. "I've been working as a security guard,", he says, somewhat ashamed of his own lies. "I didn't want you to worry, so I lied. That’s basically why I had to tel you to get birth control implants. I wasn’t ready to be a father.", remorse is written across his face.

"You promised to handle Ellie's work, but you deliberately sabotaged her instead. You don't think you owe her an apology?" I scoffed and shot right back. "First of all, I never promised anything. You forced that file on me. Second, even if I did agree to help her, I never said I'd do a good job. So how exactly did I break my word?" Robert's and Ellie's faces turned ashen. They wanted to argue, but they couldn't find a single flaw in my logic. Ellie squeezed out two pathetic tears, whimpering. "Melanie, I had no idea you hated me this much. If there's no room for me here, I'll just resign!"

Now, all I could do was wait and see how Axel would respond. I knew Axel hated when I lied. The thought made my stomach twist with anxiety. I had to decide whether to own up to my actions or try to spin a convincing story. But lying to Axel was never a good idea. He had a way of seeing right through me, and it only made things worse.
