Instead of answering, I turned my back to him, hoping he would take the hint and leave.
"Well, I just wanted to help." His voice was louder now, enough to break through my defenses.
I let out a deep sigh, my shoulders dropping. "Fine," I admitted, my voice cracking slightly. I lowered my head, my fingers playing with the hem of my sweater. "I lied."
Liam raised an eyebrow but didn’t interrupt.
"I just didn’t want her stealing the show again," I muttered, finally speaking the unvarnished truth.
A knowing look crossed his face. "Well, that’s a bummer. You’ve found yourself in a real hot pot." He smirked, clearly enjoying my misery.
