I just knew that I had to make sure my brother was safe and taken care of. I failed. I failed my brother in a way that can’t be clearly measured. I have no idea how I can fix this; how I can make this up to him. All I had to do was keep him safe, and I couldn’t even handle that. I close my eyes and let my thoughts take over while feeling sorry for myself.

I dropped to my knees right there on the cold supermarket floor and slammed my fists down, over and over again. “Fuck!” I cried out, my voice cracking, my throat burning. “No, no, no!” My palms stung, knees scraped on the tiles, but it didn’t matter. I couldn’t feel anything except the rage boiling inside me, rising until it drowned the ache in my chest. Lucas. My brother. Gone. They got him. After everything.
