He Divorced Me On Our Anniversary
“But thank you for trying.”
My throat tightens. “I should have been trying a long time ago,” I say.
She nods slowly and for the first time since everything exploded she doesn’t look at me like I’m an enemy just someone who hurt her and someone she’s learning how to tolerate again.
As I drive home I replay every small moment of the past few weeks. The groceries, the porch, the light, the baby room and dinner.
None of it fixes what I did or erases the divorce, the lies, the betrayal, the kidnapping, the blood but it builds something new fragile, tentative and real.
