After getting back to my rented apartment, I started typing on my computer. "City life is far too complicated. I'm going to retire and enjoy a quiet life instead." After emailing my resignation letter to Chief Hudson, I yanked out the SIM card of my work number and tossed it away. Then, I left with my suitcase to catch the last flight back to my hometown. Now that my phone was not buzzing at all hours of the day, I slept on the plane with an eye mask to keep the light out. It was the best and most restful sleep I'd gotten ever since I joined the police force.

Officers exchanged smiles and nods of approval, and for a moment, the grim realities of their job faded into the background.
