I opened my eyes, hoping to see empathy, maybe a motherly sweetness shining back at me, but her expression was harder than ever.

Hard and sharp like a whip. “This union is good for both families.” There was this strange tone in her voice, one that spoke of something more personal. “This will help secure our name. It’ll give us more power.” My mother grabbed my chin painfully, and I winced, unable to hide the sting from my expression. “Now say it, Nina.”
Her cloying, too-strong perfume made me sick.
