Jade's POV ​The dawn didn’t bring warmth; it brought a flat, clinical light that turned the frozen landscape into a high-contrast nightmare. The skeletal branches of the pines were etched in charcoal against a sky the color of unpolished zinc. Behind us, the smoke from the lodge was a thin, grey needle stitching the earth to the clouds.

Aria's POV The drive to Silvercrest took over an hour, but it passed in a focused silence between my partner and me. "Look at the tall pines," I muttered to Maya's hearing as soon as we approached the borders of the pack. "Very beautiful," she replied. "They're oldies but still goldies." I nodded, noting how the shadows of the pines stretched long across the asphalt as the sun climbed toward its late morning peak. The deeper we drove into Silvercrest, the more dazed we were with its natural touch.

Pine came from a pack where females were subservient and listened faithfully to their mates.

Jean was wearing a black shirt and blue denim Bermuda shorts and was walking in all her glory with an ice cream cone in her hand and relishing it. They had not exchanged any messages and neither had they spoken to each other on call in a while. So, they were not aware of the other person’s plan of action for the day. In fact, Marie had not even told her about the sleepover planned at Jean’s house which her dad allowed her for, and that was all the more reason for her to be excited about.

And I just feel weird, a heavy mix of discomfort and confusion, watching her pretend. We pull off the main road onto a long, winding gravel drive. Towering pines line the path, their branches heavy with snow, creating a hushed, almost magical tunnel. The air grows colder, crisper, carrying the scent of pine and frozen earth. After several minutes, the trees thin out, revealing a breathtaking sight.
