The first section was bureaucratic—council minutes, resource allocations, the dry language of people building something terrible and calling it policy. I moved through it quickly, scanning for substance.

But he didn’t stop me. He never did. That was his mistake. Later that night, when the camp was quiet, I returned to the book. Its pages were made of skinfold, stretched, mumbling as I turned them. The ink shimmered like dried blood. Each line pulsed softly, alive with illegal power.

The first book is about the coming of age of Dell, a natural, and the last two are about her son, Malachi, a dhampir — half-human and half-vampire. 72. Good idea, but flawed. 73. Fledgling BY OCTAVIA BUTLER The late Octavia Butler was a very talented African-American science fiction writer, and this book is an exploration of difference, prejudice and race, with a half-human, half-vampire protagonist who's a genetic experiment and can operate in the daytime.
