IRIS’S POV The laptop screen glowed a sickly, clinical blue, like some cheap interrogation lamp reflecting off the damp metal walls of this tomb. Outside, the world was ending in real-time; the rain was a relentless hammer against the corrugated roof, boots were crunching rhythmically over wet gravel, and that amplified, metallic voice from the megaphone kept barking orders like we were already dead and just waiting for the paperwork to clear. In here, though, my entire universe had shrunk down to a single green progress bar crawling across the dark display with a teasing, agonizing slowness.

ERICA The wait was excruciating with my skin buzzing and sight compromised. But I could hear the shower going on in the bathroom and more than that I heard the silence when the shower eventually stopped. And as I anticipated his return, the anticipation turned out to be something I wasn’t prepared for, the wait left me feeling adrift and lost.

The door shuts behind me. The smell hits first. Blood, sweat, fear, metal, and concrete. I walk forward slowly, boots echoing against the floor. As I pass the prison cells, men tied inside them lift their heads weakly. Some beg. Some whimper. Some don’t even have the strength to react anymore. I ignore them. They’re not why I’m here. I roll up my sleeves, crack my knuckles, rotate my neck until it pops. I need this. I need something to bleed on.

I sat on the edge of the bed naked, crumbs on my thighs and shook an empty bottle in my hand. Rubbed my belly again and whispered. “We’re going to be okay.” “We have to be.” The pup fluttered once and softly reassuring. I closed my eyes, breathed and waited. Because waiting was all I had left. For food. For strength. For the moment when waiting turned into something else. Something sharper, something that didn’t cry quietly and something that fought but not yet.
