I followed her line of sight but saw nothing. Vines rose up from the floor and wrapped around the air. Violet’s arm pulled backwards, bringing the vines closer. A pained grunt was heard, making me realize that it was actually someone that we couldn’t see. “Pull your gift back or else these vines will turn into wolfsbane. Now, that’s some pretty painful shit from what I’ve heard. You have fifteen seconds to decided,” Violet told the invisible person. To make her point and psych out whoever the fuck it was, a new vine appeared as the seconds ticked by.

I planned to search the rooms one by one. The first room had a window, and the curtains were drawn. However, the window was wide open. Wind was blowing through the curtains, letting in a bit of light. It looked like there were rows of display cases that looked like glass boxes with something inside. It almost felt like dozens of eyes were watching me from the inside… I quickly turned on the light and saw rows and rows of severed heads! I covered my mouth, forcing myself to stay calm, but the shock was too much. My vision went black for a second. I kept my eyes shut for a long time before slowly recovering.

Not like a tide—like a strike. It tore through me—full-body, spiral-born, tether-fed. Not natural. Not timed. Just wrong. My vision whited out. My ribs bowed, and a sound escaped me that wasn’t a cry, wasn’t a growl—just raw. Fitz begins checking the houses nearest the village center. And Iris... Iris stands perfectly still in the middle of the main square, her eyes closed, her face tilted slightly upward. "What are you doing?" I ask, moving closer despite myself. "Sensing." She doesn't open her eyes. "The wraith left traces. Magical residue. It's like..." She pauses, searching for words. "Like a scent, but in the mental realm. Dark. Hungry. Old." I watch her face as she works, noting the subtle shifts in her expression. The slight furrow between her brows. The way her lips press together when she encounters something particularly strong.

I am standing still, not even nodding my head. “Come, Stella. We should go home” she got hold of my hands and we reached her car. I didn’t think about anything. I just slept in the car itself. …. I am here wearing a tight-fitting black dress. It looks like I was going to war. The door opened to reveal Chris in a stern face. “Are you ready?” “Yeah,” I got hold of his hands and went outside to see a whole group of robots standing and seeing us. They are shouting about something. I can’t able to concentrate on it. My head is spinning. It hurts. Everything looks upside down.

The next day, I woke up feeling much better. Thanks to Geoff. I brushed my teeth and took a nice long shower. I pulled on a pair of skinny jeans and a loose T-shirt. Just as I was about to head out, I noticed something in my room. Something small, black and round. Something very similar to a hidden camera. With my pulse pounding in my ears, I walked closer and I knew. I knew a camera when I saw one. With anger fuelling me, I reared my arm back and punched the camera, shattering it into pieces.

Pull. With a sharp, violent twist of my wrists, the shadows along the volcanic pit violently elongated, rising up from the boiling steam like solid walls of black glass. I didn't try to absorb the blinding white light this time; I used the shadows to violently clamp onto the spinning brass arms of the wheel, creating a massive, grinding drag against the machinery. The metal screeched in agonizing protest as my void collided with their solar grid. "The abomination is forcing the gears!" a priest screamed from behind the partition, his voice cracking with sudden terror. "The capacitors are backing up! Release the light-wards! Purge the vault!"

“You bastard…” Footsteps on the path behind us. “Sophia? Are you out here?” Ryan’s voice. Davies moved fast. He grabbed me and pulled me into the thick shadows beside the boathouse, pressing my back against the wooden wall. Before I could protest, he shoved two fingers back inside me, deep and sudden. His other hand covered my mouth. “Shhh,” he whispered hotly in my ear, slowly pumping his fingers while Ryan’s footsteps got closer. “Not a fucking sound.”

He felt the Echoes stirring around him, whispers of forgiveness, anger, longing. A roar echoed, the pit trembled, smoke and ash rose like a tidal wave. The crown began to spin above the pit, faster and faster, the embers flared, the air went hot, John shielded his eyes. Sarah took hold of his arm. “We have to break it from the inside.”
