I really disagree with the idea that fan theories need to 'align' with canon events to be worthwhile. The whole joy of fanfiction, for me, is exploring the spaces canon leaves blank. A lot of Izuocha canon is about small, tender moments built over time. The theories I find most interesting are the ones that take those tiny seeds and imagine how they could grow into something different. Like, what if Izuku's admiration for Ochako's strength evolved into recognizing her own struggles with the pressure of her family's finances? That's not directly in the manga, but it feels like a plausible extension of their established characters. I read this one fic that explored Ochako using her quirk for subtle, non-heroic purposes to help her parents, and Izuku noticing and supporting her in a way no one else did. It felt more true to their dynamic than any 'they get together after graduation' prediction.

That said, if I had to pick one type of theory that feels canon-adjacent, it's the ones about Ochako being the emotional anchor. Izuku is constantly breaking himself physically; a common fan idea is that Ochako becomes the person who insists he has to put himself back together emotionally, too. We see glimmers of that in her worry for him. A theory that she's the one who eventually helps him find a balance between self-sacrifice and self-preservation just clicks for me.

Izuku telling Ochaco he sees her as more than just a pretty face in the aftermath of the sports festival always comes to mind. It’s a quiet beat where he recognizes her frustration about being underestimated and validates her strength on its own terms. That mutual respect feels like the bedrock they built everything else on.

Then there’s the provisional license exam, where she pushes past her limits to save him and declares she’ll become a hero he can rely on. The look on his face says everything—it’ s not just gratitude, it’s seeing her in a new light, as a true partner. Those two scenes together map out their whole dynamic: he sees her, and then she proves she can stand beside him.

Later stuff, like their team-up against Nine in the movie or the gentle way she checks on him after big fights, adds layers, but those early moments set the tone. It’s less about grand romantic gestures and more about these accumulating instances of unwavering support.

Izuku and Ochaco’s relationship in the canon material pushes both of them toward their heroic ideals in a way that feels grounded. Izuku’s relentless drive to become a hero like All Might is mirrored in Ochaco’s own journey from wanting to support her family to genuinely embracing heroism for its own sake. She’s not just a love interest; she’s a benchmark for his growth. When he sees her struggle and succeed, it reinforces his belief that hard work and heart matter more than innate power. Her practicality often balances his impulsiveness, too.

What I find really interesting is how her feelings for him actually fuel her development separately. She decides to become stronger partly to stand beside him, not just to be with him. That distinction is huge. It turns a typical crush subplot into a source of independent motivation. Their moments, like the provisional license exam talk, show a mutual respect that feels earned.

Sometimes I think the series could dive deeper into their direct interactions, but the foundation is solid. The canon uses their dynamic to underline the series’ core themes about self-improvement and compassion without making it overly romantic too early. It’s a slow burn that services character first, which is why it resonates.
