Some made the sign of warding with their fingers, whispering as she left the room. “That’s the cursed one,” she heard one murmur. “The girl who brought the storm.” By seventeen, she had learned not to speak unless asked. She moved like smoke and silence—present, but never welcome. That was the year she broke a boy’s nose during combat drills. She hadn’t meant to, not really. But when he leaned close and muttered Shadowspawn in her ear, something hot and primal took her over. The crunch of bone. The smear of blood. The sudden silence.
