She took the drink with a smile and takes a sip. He relaxed his hands in his pocket, and scoots closer to her, heaving a sigh. “Enjoying?” he asked. It seems like every girl in the hallway already knows, even the exact time when they were born. "Smile at them." I slightly nudged him. Cole was already there, pinning him down with his forearm. "She told you to stop, asshole," Cole says through gritted teeth, and instantly my body feels relieved. "Hey, Cole," Jesse says with a sly smile on his face. "I didn't hear you get home." I'm confused. Why is he smiling in a situation like this? Didn't he just get caught? Wouldn't he be kicked out of the house right now? "Who exactly is this guy?" I asked him. "Do you mean that you haven't told her any of the cute stories about me?" Jesse said sarcastically and Cole scoffed at him.

The flickering light caught the edges of his face, casting shadows that made his expression hard to read. He smirked and shrugged, a glint of amusement in his eyes. “Okay, I see what you did there,” Cole chuckled, his laughter soft but genuine. For the first time since finding out that my child was dead, I smiled genuinely. The muscles in my face felt stiff and unused, but the small act of smiling brought a brief flicker of warmth to my cold, aching heart.
