I smiled when I saw Cole standing by the kitchen island and he shook his head at me as his back rested against the counter top. "How are you smiling right now, my head is killing me." He said and I shrugged. "I drank a tomato smoothie earlier." I told him and he frowned at me. "I made some for you too." I said and he smiled softly. "Thank you." He said before grabbing the tomato smoothie I made for him from the refrigerator. "My dad and your mom are out of town again. For the week." Cole said and I frowned lightly. "Wow, they didn't even say goodbye." I said in disbelief.

River asked flatly, his tone laced with irritation. Cole smirked, leaning casually against the bar. He was dressed neatly, in a fitted black jacket, his hair styled perfectly. He looked like someone who belonged at a fancy party, not a dingy bar. “Relax,” Cole said, raising both hands in mock surrender. “I’m not here to fight. I just… wanted to talk.” River narrowed his eyes. “Talk about what? Because if it’s about Jace, save it. He doesn’t need you in his life.”

"You married me because you couldn't resist me. Admit it." A laugh burst out of me, soft but genuine, and Cole grinned like he'd just won a battle. He pulled back, satisfaction written across his face. "There it is," he said triumphantly. "That's the real smile. I knew I'd get it out of you." I tried to hide it, ducking my head, but he tilted my chin up with two fingers until our eyes met again. His gaze softened, less teasing now and more tender. "I missed that," he murmured.

A woman at the front of the line coos. Her brunette friend cups her hands around her ruby-red lips and shouts, “I love your friend!” The two giggled, their laughter lost within the chatter of the crowd. Cole turns his head upon hearing them, his thousand-watt smile still perfectly in place. I have to hand it to him. I’d never say it out loud, but Cole’s ability to fake his emotions has impressed me on more than one occasion. How the man can smile and laugh but be seconds away from murdering a room full of people, I’d never understand.

Cole watched the whole thing from where he stood beside me, his silver light fading back beneath his skin the way mine did, and when it was over he looked at Thorian with an expression that was careful and assessing and underneath both of those things quietly impressed. "He takes your safety seriously," Cole said. "He takes everything seriously," I said. "It is one of his more exhausting qualities." Cole looked at me. And then something happened in his face that I was not prepared for. A smile. Slow and genuine and so completely familiar that it stopped my breath for a second because I had seen that smile before. For a second, Cole just stared at me. Then he smiled. Not the cocky smile. Not the teasing smile. The real one. The one he didn’t show everybody. And somehow that smile felt more important than winning mini golf. More important than campus rumors. More important than any of it. Because for the first time in a very long time… I wasn’t just surviving anymore. I was happy. And maybe the most terrifying part of all? Was how much of that happiness was standing right in front of me.

My breath catches, just slightly. He’s rugged, there’s no better word for it. Strong jawline, a faint shadow of stubble, and eyes that are just… intense. But it’s the smile that gets me. It’s easy, genuine, like the kind of smile that sneaks up on you and lingers in your thoughts long after it’s gone. Valerie practically beams with pride as she gestures between us. “This is Cole,” she says, then turns to him. “And this is Hazel, the one I’ve been telling you about.”

“Ahem, he cleared his throat, and her eyes flew to his face quickly. So fast Cole had the distinct feeling it had been teetering on the edge of doing so for a while now. He smiled. A full grin which transformed his face into a boyish look. Making him look far younger than he was. Emily stared at it, transfixed. It was the first time the power of that smile was joyfully cast her way. And then as she continued to peruse him, he dissolved into a soft chuckle. Flashing white teeth. An open-mouthed chuckle that made him look kind and admirable, a look Emily rarely saw on his face.

The manager dropped the news. Cole's victorious smile faded after gaining the knowledge while Karen gave him a 'what the hell is going on' stare.
