I say looking at him like’ what the hell? “Okay.” He says smiling at me. “J Cole.” I say and he looks at me amused. “I would have never guessed that, ever!” he says looking at me like I’m someone new. “He’s hot to you?” He asks smiling at me like he knows something I don’t. “I just know that he and I would have a deep and fulfilling conversation.” I say smiling at him too. “Huh!” He says taking another shot. “What’s yours?” I ask looking at him swallowing the tequila and make a face.

“I heard you got yourself a fake girlfriend. I just didn’t realize it was going to be this fun to watch.” Behind the camera, Trent Coleman’s face broke into the first real smile he’d worn all night.

I looked at the three of them. Luke with his eyes closed and his arm finally, mercifully back on the mattress where it belonged, a curve at the corner of his mouth he probably wasn't aware of. Finn with one pillow pressed to his chest in retaliation, already halfway to sleep, radiating the specific satisfaction of someone who has orchestrated nothing and received everything. Cole on his back with the lamplight on his face and that smile still there — small, private, sitting in the corner of his mouth like it had always been there, like it had just been waiting for the right conditions to come out.

I stood in the middle of the living room, facing the security camera's blinking red light, practicing my smile again and again. Looking into the lens, I spoke softly, like I was leaving a message for the Mom who'd watch it someday. "Mom, look. I practiced the perfect smile again today. "Lift the corners of my mouth fifteen degrees and show eight teeth. The books say that's the most sincere smile. The one that makes people feel warm. "I've practiced so much my face hurts... but that's okay. "When you watch this tomorrow... will you tell me I did a good job? "Will you finally believe I wasn't lying to you?"

Cole is already waiting at the gate by the sidewalk. Of course he is. I jog over to him, trying very unsuccessfully to look casual. He opens the gate for me, takes his mug, and gestures toward his porch like it’s the most natural thing in the world. I’m grinning like a complete idiot. The biggest idiot alive, probably. But here’s the thing. I don’t care. Not even a little. Because Cole is smiling too. His hair is still messy from his shower, damp strands falling in different directions. He’s wearing a white linen shirt today instead of his usual polo or T-shirt, sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

I could almost feel his eyes find me and I held my breath for a second before I schooled my face and turned to him. "Good morning Cole," I smiled as sweetly as I could. "Would you like some coffee?" The look on his face was priceless… in fact if I could have taken a photo of it to frame I totally would have. He stood there opening and closing his mouth like a goldfish, and it was everything I could have hoped for. "Yeah, thanks," he eventually replied, going to sit beside Jay. He shot Jay a look but Jay just shook his head as if to tell him not to comment on my outfit of choice.

But that didn't mean he wouldn't do something endearing in the next minute, winning me over all over again with his charming smile and disarming charm. "For real?" he asked, his brow furrowing in concern, his eyes welling up with a mixture of sadness and worry. If I didn't know better, I'd think Cole was on the verge of tears, his emotions raw and exposed. "Don't look at me like that, you can be an asshole sometimes," I said, shoving him playfully, trying to lighten the mood. That made him laugh, the tension dissipating as he smiled, his eyes sparkling with amusement. "You're one to talk?" he smirked, his hands sliding under my hoodie, caressing my back with a gentle touch that sent shivers

I felt the warmth of it from across the car park and I was already moving toward her when I registered who she was laughing with. It was Cole.
