I smile, throwing my shoulders back. Three of them burst into fits of laughter, whilst Maddox stares at me with a strange look in his eyes, one I didn’t even want to decipher, I had boiled it down to either sex or murder, neither of which I would appreciate. I should have known they would find it hard to believe, their hadn’t been a Phoenix sighting in many years, the last one when I was only a child and I didn’t know to hide what I was. I bite my trembling lip stronger, and I am torn between hanging up or listening to what he’s about to say. Now, I’m more curious about his well-being. Is he sick? Dying? My tears won’t stop, thinking of Phoenix is dying. It’s killing me. I shake to cry. “Okay,” I mumble with a sniff. The line went off. I look at my phone screen, then I hear footsteps approaching. My heartbeat races. I yelp when I turn around to see Hawk is marching toward me.

Then she walked up to me, viciously grinding her foot into my wound, using my blood as ink to press down her handprint. After finishing all this, she revealed a cruel smile. "Let him go," she ordered the security guards before saying to me, "John, you know? Your look of despair was just like your mother's before she died. On the day I went to court to declare you dead, I deliberately delivered the good news to your mother. Who would have thought that she'd be so frail? She passed away due to a heart attack." Nora did not have an ounce of pity on her face, only provocation.

His eyes haven't left the screen since Drexton told him about the death. Jaxon felt his presence and shifted his eyes to him. "The hospital?" Maddox nodded. "Vaughn's daughter was murdered before Drexton could get to her," Jaxon muttered. "Somebody else wanted her dead," Maddox added.

“To our special relationship.” He drank back his whisky. We didn’t drink. “Enough,” Phoenix said. “What do you want?” Jetter nodded. “Okay, okay.” He sat back down, leaning against the bar. “We had a boy killed last night during a little drug deal. I was hoping you might know something about it.” “We weren’t involved,” Phoenix said. “I figured you weren’t. The deal was with the Snake Spits. I didn’t think you’d go up against them.”

As I fell onto the cold floor, tears streaming down my face, I could hear Phoenix howling and reassuring me that everything would be alright. "Myra, please don't cry, it's going to be fine." Phoenix quipped, trying to make me feel better. "Phoenix please stop with the empty reassurances. This will never be fine. I've been proven guilty before the entire court and I was sentenced to death. Phoenix I would be cremated! No, we would be cremated! You will die! I will die and you say it's going to be fine?!" I couldn't help the anger that surged through me as I lashed out. My words hung in the air, heavy with resignation and sorrow.

And bigger suits rolled in. “Nobody since the shot out last night,” Jinx replied, and I cursed. One of the prospects, along with Carbon, came into the room too, and unfortunately, the young prospect couldn’t handle the smell and sight. I watched as Jinx and Carbon took care of him, remembering the first time I saw a dead body. And the first man I killed!

"I did it to protect you, son. I did it to keep you safe." Surprisingly, my expression didn't change. I can't believe this was the father I knew, my hero! I glared at my father, my voice shaking with anger and confusion. "You faked your own death, abandoned me and mom... why?" Phoenix took another step forward, his hands outstretched. I had to protect you and your mom, so I faked my own death and went into hiding."

The judge calls before turning to me, “Miss Allard, surely you know what happened to Mr Sinclair’s business partner?” The bang of the gun rings in my memory, and I see Jaxon fall to his death for what must be the millionth time. It plays like background noise sometimes, but it no longer has a hold on me like it once did. “Yes your honour, I’m quite aware of what happened to Jaxon Pierce. He did die in front of me after all.” More whispers. More gossip.
