The smell of institutional breakfast food hung in the air, not quite appetizing but functional enough for people who had forgotten what real hunger felt like. Liam sat at a corner table with his second cup of coffee, watching the entrance. Jackson had gone up to see Avery and the baby an hour ago. Visiting hours started at six but the nurses had made an exception for the family, understanding that some reunions could not wait for posted schedules.

Emily jumped up and hurried to the door. Jackson stood there, wearing his usual camel-colored coat, looking travel-worn but determined, holding several takeout boxes in his hands. He stepped into the room. “Miss Carter, it’s practically noon. Why are you still in bed? Eat, sleep, repeat—are you trying to live like a pig?” Emily quickly gathered the scattered documents from the coffee table to make space for him. “Careful, don’t burn yourself.” Jackson glanced at the papers in her hand. “Offer? From which company?”

Shane stared, unable to believe Jackson would wait for them to get home. "Jack?" Grace furrowed her brow. When the car stopped in front of the fence, Grace got out of the car. She was curious: what exactly was the purpose of Jackson coming to her at this time of night? "Where have you been? I've been waiting for you for three hours." Jackson asked sharply as soon as Grace approached him. "Where I've been is none of your business. What did you come here for?" Grace replied in an equally sharp tone. "Did your secretary not deliver the message I said?" Jackson looked annoyed. He had never been made to wait this long, especially since the weather was quite cold tonight.

she softly said. “My wife is right, Mr. Hawke. I do not attend dinner parties,” Jake replied. “If you wish to discuss business, I will be happy to do so at the dance. I do all of my after hour business dealings there. Otherwise, I open my bank on Monday at nine. It is across from the dress shop on Delaware Avenue.” Sue noted the rising tension in his voice. “Then Belinda and I shall be going,” Jim rigidly stated. “I might keep my business with Mr. Leroy.”

After the class, I decided to go to the library and wait for Jonathan there. We’re both unfamiliar with our condo locations so we agreed to just wait for each one of us. He still have classes until 6:15 in the evening. Johansson’s Library were huge and full of new collections of different books all around the world. I picked two books with me and look for a table where I can read but all the tables were occupied. I saw an empty chair at the end corner of Science section and marched there.

“All right, we have a couple hours until the meeting with the lawyer. Let’s grab lunch. What sounds good?” Wren couldn’t decide so Jackson took them to a ramen place. It was nice and warm and savory and Jackson liked introducing Wren to new things. He loved seeing the hesitancy fade out to pleasure as Wren took the first cautious bites. “They have holiday lights up at the botanical gardens,” Jackson said when they were finishing up their lunch. “Want to go tonight?”

He stared at the table, saying nothing. So did Shopia. The silence between them wasn't peace. It was pressure. Suffocating. "I start work at eight," Jackson finally said, without looking at her. Shopia only nodded, then began toasting the last two slices of bread. The scent of burnt toast from their old toaster filled the room, adding to the grim mood of the morning. "I might be home late. They need someone for the extra shift," Jackson added quietly. "For what? So we can enjoy another week of instant noodles?" Shopia shot back coldly, without turning around.

He stated and Carolina suddenly became interested in the conversation. "Tell me all about it then" she replied. "Of course, our meeting days are on Mondays. You can join us today to get more information. Our venue is at the auditorium" Jackson explained and Carolina nodded. "Then I will see you later" he added and left the hall too after giving Carolina a small wave. Carolina went back home later in the day after classes, and she was surprised to see one of Connor's favorite cars still parked in the garage, "I thought he was going to take this one to work today" she thought to herself before making her way into the house.

Jackson's office number. “Hello sir,” he said. “Evan,” Mr. Jackson responded. “I have arrived. Driving in right now.” “Don’t.” Evan got surprised. “Why sir?” “We are meeting at Cairo apartments. We’ll be having a brunch meeting. Meet us here at 11am.” “We?” “Yes Evan. You’ll find us. Don’t be late,” Mr. Jackson cut the call. Evan wondered who the third person was. Initially, the meeting was between him and Mr. Jackson. He reached Cairo apartments at exactly 11am. As expected, he found Mr. Jackson waiting for him in the lobby.

I spend the rest of the afternoon taking advantage of the super plush couch and the wide screen TV in the lounge by vegging out in-between cooking. It’s just like any other Sunday for me except I don’t have my pack around me, and I’m not in my cottage on my own. Jackson on the other hand, spends it on the phone with contractors in the office. Considering it’s a Sunday, that’s serious dedication on his part. It’s seven by the time Jackson emerges from the office, his eyes tired, and I can’t help but feel a touch guilty because all I’ve done is watch N*****x. “You ready to eat?”
