Isabella had started dating Jackson five years ago, back when he lived just a few blocks from her late uncle’s house. Back then, seeing him had been effortless—stolen moments after school, late-night walks, and whispered conversations that stretched until dawn. Unfortunately, everything changed two years ago when Jackson was transferred for work to a different city—New York City. The distance had turned their relationship into a cycle of calls, texts, and occasional visits, each reunion feeling shorter than the last. Over the past two years, Isabella had visited Jackson occasionally, but never once had she stopped by to see her mother.

Daniel Brooke was stuck in an island resort with Jasmine Brown. Mr. Mayor owned that island, and the security sealed all the entry and exit points. There were no guests in the resort other than them. Jasmine Brown was spending time happily while Daniel Brooke was fidgety. He was waiting for a response from the private detective. Every hour he checked his mail, hoping that he would receive information from him.

Seeing a fat squirrel looking at her from the branch, Jessica threw one of the wild fruits in her hand over. Without aim, the fruit fell to the ground, scaring the squirrel away. "Is it fun?" Blake stood behind her. Jessica knew it was him when she heard his footsteps, so she didn't look back. She said, "It's worth it to buy this island by Mo Feitong." She really liked this place. "When I came here just now, I saw a pheasant and a black goat." Blake picked up the leaves from her hair and said, "I'll buy an island too. We'll live in retirement. It's called Xiang Island. Only the two of us can live on the island. No one can come here."

"Believe me, I know. This is fucked up enough without anything else happening." She nodded quickly. "Good. I just wanted to... make sure you knew." "I definitely know," Mark replied. "Good. Shall we disembark then?" Jasmine smiled. "Go and explore paradise? We can run through the rest of your schedule later." Mark squared his shoulders and nodded. "Okay." Jasmine led him up the gangplank onto the pier where the first person to step forward was Henry, an elderly gent in his early sixties. They shook hands. "Welcome to the Island, Master Whitney," Henry said, his accent like the stiff upper lip British you'd hear in an old sitcom like Fawlty Towers.

"Though some history is worth revisiting, don't you think?" Jackson's hand found mine under the table. Squeezed hard. "How long are you in Chicago?" I asked, desperate to change the subject. "I'm flexible. A few weeks, at least. Through Valentine's Day, certainly." Valentine's Day. Two weeks away. Our next scheduled event. "That's a long vacation," Jackson said. "I needed a break. And I wanted to see you." She looked right at him, ignoring me completely. "Make sure you're happy. That you've really moved on."

Jackson flashes next to the moving dot. And it’s not standing still. Jackson is on the move.

The resort was beautiful and very luxurious to say the least and neither one of them had realized that there were so many more people on the Island other than them who were staying at the resort. "Welcome Miss Gambino, what can I do for you? would you like to go to the massage rooms? or perhaps some relaxing acupuncture treatment or if you prefer, water Zumba?" Jax had appeared out of nowhere and was going on and on about the Island activities, not giving them a chance to talk at all. "Jax, Jax ! it's fine, don't worry about me I am just here to look around and have a good time. None of that acupuncture or Zumba stuff " Isla said cutting him off and thankfully, he got the hint.

I need to run to my room. I jump as a large shoe box is thrown on the island. Confused, I spin towards Jackson. “These are the cards and letters we sent to you for two years. There are even emails for the only address we had for you.” His face is stone serious. Jackson grabs the bottle of Jim Beam and takes a long pull. I blink at this new information. I finger through the papers and cards marked “Return to Sender.” I watch as Jackson takes a second sip then replaces the bottle on the counter between us.

She took another sip of ginger ale. “It’s just us here, so we’ll have to mostly fend for ourselves. I’m afraid I only have Jeb and some security on the island right now.” “Jeb was the man who took the speed boat on the beach, right?” Emma asked, recalling the name. Jackson smiled at her. “Yes. He maintains the island for me. When our plans changed, he set up our dinner here instead of out on the yacht like I had planned.” “Thank you for changing your plans,” Emma said. “I’m sorry about my stomach.”
