CHAPTER 21 HOPE POINT OF VIEW today was so freaking stressful. I and Jordan were at Jambe, a little town found at the far north of chance city . Jambe is actually under the protection of the Adams , just last night some group of bandit attacked them and abducted a lot of woman and children which am sure were to be sold out to the slave traders . we both stood inside an old looking house which actually belongs to the chief .this place looks like it was gonna collapse if an external force is used on it .

Nothing about it was fair any more. These past few years Jane had begun to accept the fact that she wasn't one of the Waleskis. And she had started writing a book called the Unfair Life of Jane, Plain, and Short. It wasn't a real book, just a list of experiences and even that made Jane wonder whether the universe had something in the particular against her. For example:

She was Jessica's good friend, Adeline. Seeing that Grace was an unfamiliar face, Adeline began giving a short introduction. "We have a wide range of books available in our store. If you can't find the book that you want, tell me the title, and I'll help you check on the computer."

Jane said. Sally wasn’t too sure about this, she didn’t feel like chatting with Jane, but she was excited to see what Jane might have picked out for her, it might be an Audrey Niffenegger or a new Jennifer Egan she hadn’t read. Jane nipped into the back room and appeared a moment later with a thick, green pamphlet. “I think you might find this very interesting,” she said, handing it to Sally.

Emily’s father more than likely donated all her books to Arcane Delights, a used book store on Main Street run by Kevin Ellison, (where I still have over a hundred dollars trade-in credit I’ll never use). Whoever lived in the house on Hyland Avenue had purchased it, ignorant of its origins. When they’d finished it, they had discarded it.

It hasn't been easy, but she wouldn't have gotten as far as she did without courage. She decided to stop off before band practice at her favorite used book store in the city. It was a bit of a drive but it was the best place on earth to her. An old brownstone building with exposed brick inside. Shelves of books lined the walls on three floors and in the basement there were old magazines and newspapers. Stacks of other worlds and words everywhere you looked. The place smelled like old paper and leather. Faded oriental rugs covered the floor and vintage lamps and leather chairs were placed around to sit and read. She'd wasted many hours of her life there. Her favorites were the poets and class

Warm yellow lights glowed softly across crowded wooden shelves while quiet jazz played somewhere overhead. Outside, ocean rain tapped gently against the windows, turning the entire little shop into something almost dreamlike. Elena Laurent loved places like this. Quiet places. Places that didn’t demand anything from people except presence. Meanwhile beside her, Adrian Laurent carried an increasingly unreasonable stack of books in both arms.

The city moved at a gentler pace. People bundled in coats hurried through streets. Children built imperfect snowmen. Cars crawled cautiously through intersections. Life continued. Beautifully ordinary. Later that afternoon, Ama found herself walking home alone. Fresh snow crunched beneath her boots. The air carried that unique winter stillness. Not silence. A quieter version of the world. She passed a bookstore. Then stopped. A display window had caught her attention. New releases. Classic novels. Poetry collections. Stories. So many stories. Each one beginning with a choice.

THEY were on Chambers Street when it happened. It was a Saturday afternoon and they had come back to the gallery district because Ifeanyi had been told by a colleague about a bookshop two doors down from the gallery that specialized in architectural texts, and he wanted to find a specific out-of-print title. Then, Amelia had said she would come because she needed a Saturday that did not involve spreadsheets and the bookshop was supposedly excellent. It was excellent. She spent forty minutes in it and left with three books she hadn't planned to buy, which she considered a mark of quality.

Mara’s face lit up instantly. “Jane!” she said, stepping forward and wrapping her arms around a woman who looked… polished. Jane hugged her back, one arm careful because she was holding a stack of books, leather-bound, heavy, the kind people carried to look important. “Good to see you outside your cave,” Mara teased. “Though judging by those books, you’re about to disappear again.” Jane smiled, tight and controlled. “Probably,” she said. “But I’ll make time for you two. I always do.”
