He: "I still like it." She looked at the sketch again, seeing it through his attention rather than her own habitual dismissal of unfinished work. The hands. The book. The specific quality of a Saturday afternoon captured in a few quick lines. She signed: "I'll finish it properly. If you want it." He signed: "I want it as it is. Unfinished." She looked at him. "Why unfinished?" He: "Because it's what this actually looks like. A moment, not a portrait. I don't want the moment made into something more composed than it was."

“It is all theory. Early experimentation. Failed attempts. They talk about crossing boundaries but never explain how they survived doing it.” She flipped a few pages. More of the same. Names crossed out. Processes abandoned. Notes scribbled in the margins that sounded like frustration rather than discovery. Victor let out a low breath. “So all this drama for nothing.” “No,” Jane said slowly, fingers pausing. “Not nothing. Just not yet.” She flipped again. Then again. Faster this time, like she was hunting for something specific without knowing what it was. Then she stopped. The air in the room changed.
