A gold-embossed snake on the cover, thick as a novel. He set it on the table and opened it. There were seven files inside, each cover stamped with a code, a name, a photo. The first one was mine. This season's only unwitting participant."

Evelyn raised her rifle but did not aim at the figure’s chest. “Stop there,” Warren called. The figure obeyed. That was the first human thing about them. Rain dripped from the edge of the hood. Their hands were visible at their sides, empty and trembling. Too thin, Evelyn realized. The wrists, jutting from the sleeves, were narrow, almost delicate. Gabriel’s voice dropped. “That’s a kid.” The hood lifted slowly. A girl looked at them from beneath it, maybe fourteen, maybe younger, if hunger had sharpened her face. Her lips were blue from the cold. Soot streaked one cheek. Around her neck hung a strip of yellow cloth marked with a black symbol Evelyn did not recognize.

My stomach did a violent somersault. I pulled the door open and the air left my lungs. Jaydon wasn't in a suit. He wasn't the untouchable titan of industry I saw at the office. He was wearing a plain white t-shirt that stretched tight over the heavy muscles of his chest and shoulders. The sleeves gripped his biceps, and a baseball cap was pulled low over his sharp eyes. He looked raw. He looked dangerous in a way that made my skin prickle with a heat that had nothing to do with anger.

… I couldn't stop thinking about Sasha at night and didn't manage to fall asleep. In my blurry, half-conscious state, I could sense Jasper getting up from beside me and heading out the door. I’m in a soft pink gown with a bow at the collar, looking like a virgin sacrifice. The hall is packed. And somehow, in the middle of the crowd, there he is. Jayden. Black t-shirt. Gold chain. That small silver cross he always wore tucked just beneath the curve of his neck. I feel it instantly—like static. Like my skin remembers his voice before my brain does. I shouldn’t stare. I don’t even know why he’s here. Maybe it’s a prank. Maybe he came to mock. But when our eyes meet, there’s no mockery.

When he was exposed to sunlight, he felt like his body was on fire. He was looking stunning as usual, with his strong jawline and thin red attractive lips adding extra beauty to his face.

These two are such a hoot. The party is fun, but instead of Aphrodite and Orion, Mikhail and I are dressed as Ares and Persephone. As always, he’s wearing black. I've never been so pleased to hear his voice. Jayden materializes out of the dark hallway like a shadow. He's wearing a different outfit from the one he was wearing hours ago... a dark grey hoodie with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows and the same shorts. The band-aid is still stuck firmly to his jaw, giving him an incredibly menacing, rugged look under the red strobe lights. He doesn't just step into the conversation, he dominates the space between us. Brian blinks, his grip loosening on my wrist as he looks up at the campus hockey captain. Then he looks at me. "Wait... It's true? The rumours about you two?"

Gabriel stays, tapping some keys as I see the vial disperse into the clear drip. Jaden doesn’t leave, though, as everyone else files out. “Pumpkin…” he stops, seeing the look on my face as he rakes his fingers through his dark locks. I don’t miss the shadows under his eyes, his hair more messed up than normal, and the fact he is wearing grey when he normally only wears black. Someone must have lent him the joggers and hoodie he is in. He looks younger, more vulnerable without his normal bad boy swagger.
