Jeannette Walls Dad Novels & Stories

he paused to catch his breath. "When I realized that he wasn't going to tell me the truth, I decided to tell him what Janet told me. I then told him that I got a report that someone saw Whitney in Nashville with two kids and the eldest one looked like you and that when the person asked Whitney why the boy looks like you, she was reluctant at first before she eventually opened up to the person that she didn't abort the pregnancy and that you are indeed the father of the boy. Martin was in shock and it was obvious that Janet didn't lie," Dad said.

“Sit, Nate. Let’s talk.” I took a seat. He leaned back, sighed again, then looked me in the eye. “You’re right about some things. Both me and Jimmy Burns fought in Vietnam. Both of us lost our wives, leavin’ you and Jake without moms. And, though you didn’t say it, maybe you’re thinkin’ it: Jake’s dad loves his drink, and I have a beer after dinner every night. But I’m not Jimmy, and you’ll never end up like Jake, Nate. I promise.” I squirmed a little in the rocking chair. I wanted to believe Dad but couldn’t shake my worry. “How d’you know, Dad? Really.”

She just wants him to acknowledge their child. “Marti,” she called her. “What?” she asked and stared at her. “W-what should I do?” she mumbled. “What do you mean? Can you enlighten me, please?” she frowned while waiting for her answer. “H-he is Mason’s dad…” she said while staring at the television. “Mason’s dad, who?” Winona didn’t answer her. A few minutes has passed before Marti could realize what she meant. “Y-you mean MAXIMUS WALLACE IS MASON’S DAD?”

He wasn't just known for his corporate brilliance but for bedding celebrities and making headlines with scandals. And beneath that polished exterior? A ruthless, twisted monster. A man who wore his wealth like armor, using it to dodge the consequences of the countless charges against him. The asshole who always managed to walk away unscathed. A man I'd hated since high school. Loathed from the moment I first knew him. And now, the man I never imagined I'd see in my dad's office, studying my face with an intensity that made my skin crawl. What the fuck was going on?

“I’ll be right back.” I nodded. Mom pulled me aside. No doubt it was meant to share a little bit of gossip. “Is Barnette’s ex-wife around?” She hissed. “She’s in jail.” “Good. She’s an even bigger bitch than Barnette made her out to be. Who does that to their own daughter?” I rubbed my forehead and groaned. “Fine, I didn’t tell you who your father was until you were an adult, but I didn’t try to kill you.”

He purses his lips into a thin line, then he shakes his head to confirm that Trinity is not joking. “That’s the truth, Hughes,” He answers slowly, seemingly ashamed that he’s the son of who put others’ blood on his hands. “What’s the fucking truth?” I ask, focusing my attention on Rexwell. “Andrew Tennings was my dad. My real father. Mom worked as a psychiatric nurse at the mental facility where Tennings was confined. Since he wasn’t really crazy at that time, they had an affair that led mom on getting pregnant.” He stops, looking at me.

“Not much. My dad owned businesses. My mom did art and ran the galleries.” I nod, trying to decide how much to tell her and how to phrase it. For twenty-one years, this has been kept from her. How do I explain it without everything spiraling out of control? “Gray, what the hell is going on?” she demands, her voice laced with frustration. I take a deep breath. “It’s not just businesses, Sammi. They weren’t all legal. Your dad... he was part of the mafia. Your brothers knew, but because you were the youngest—and a girl—it was hidden from you.”

Finally, he was able to leave the apartment while wiping sweat from his brow. As I watched the whole thing unfold from the cameras, I couldn't help feeling impressed by Mr. Welkin's hardworking personality. Truth be told, he was an old flame of my mom's. When my dad was still alive, both of them had already gotten together behind his back. It was just that my dad never found out about my mom's affair.

Could it be possible that Dad was involved in the killing of Yohan's parents? I sighed while looking at Dad's photo, unable to stop myself from crying again. We just buried Dad earlier, and I might not be able to handle it if I find out he was involved in killing Yohan's parents. Yes, he was strict with Geneva and me, and he wasn't like other fathers who openly showed their love to their children. Dad was different, but I knew, my sister and I knew, that Dad loved us. Even though he was strict, he couldn't kill another person. No.

I had to carry Jannet’s luggage and my bikerella wasn’t the best option. Once we reached her house, she stepped in first. She went directly to her parents and a nerve popped in my head when I saw her dad making out with another woman on the living room sofa. Jannet cupped her face. When her dad saw us, he moved up and struggled to hide his peepee and naked butt. I would have nightmares of seeing my father-in-law’s genitals. Gross! “Jan…where the fuck were you all this long?!” he asked with that filthy mouth of his, with which he was kissing…who the hell was that creature? She looked like ninety percent plastic, ten percent skin.
