JANE I heard the words leave my mouth before I could stop them. "It's only fair to end this with a little bit of crass, is it not?" His eyebrows went up. Interest flickered across his face. I stood, tucking the bills into my purse with deliberate slowness. Five hundred dollars. That was textbooks and maybe even groceries that weren't ramen. My hands weren't shaking anymore. I evaluated several of your group's research projects back then." Alex froze. Anyone qualified to evaluate Dawn Holdings' research was a true authority in the field. He looked at the young woman in front of him, a name suddenly surfacing in his mind. "Wait. Are you… Rue?" Ruby smiled faintly. "Just call me Aunt Ruby. I don't go by that anymore." Alex's eyes widened.

“That's how I got a job as a nanny.” She said to Olivia. She had a pleased smile on her face, talking to her because she knew that it was something she would be happy about. As she predicted, Olivia smiled, marveled at the way luck had shone on her. "So, what's the name of the people you're supposed to work for?” she asked her. Ruby shrugged her shoulder. "All I have is a name, and nothing more. I also know I have to look after two kids and the house is in the rich neighborhood of New York. I think it's in Hudson Yards.” She said.

I asked, looking around. “You didn't come with your phone yesterday, mistress," Jane replied. “And please, call me Jane, not Ma'am." “Please call me Jade, not Mistress," I said. Realization dawned on me that Ruby held my phone and my clutch purse yesterday. In the chaos that went down, I didn't remember to get my phone from her. Shit! I had no way of contacting anyone again. What the hell was I thinking? “Lunch is waiting, Mistress– ugh, Jade,” Jane stammered.

Ruby was damn sure that the ladies also belonged to the business families. If not, why would Anna make friends with them right?
