Derrick’s POV. Watching Jesse draw was a revelation. For the first couple of minutes, as she was getting her canvas ready, she was quite talkative. She was so careful with her painting supplies, and that showcased her love for the craft from the very start. But then she started to draw and promptly lost herself to the process. After the first absentminded ‘mhms’ and ‘sures’ I got, I realized that talking to her was futile. Her mind was somewhere else, and her hand was moving lightning fast, a brush clutched in her hands.

Nothing pulls me out of a weird mood faster than doodling. As we go through the scene for the umpteenth time, I find myself doing rough sketches of the men in front of me. None of my drawings ever look particularly realistic - my doodles have more of a cartoony, comic book style - but I'm pretty proud of how they turn out. I pull my knees up onto the couch, tucking one of them beneath me as I flip open the sketchbook to a clean page. With my pencil in hand, I let my mind drift. My fingers begin to move without thought, lines forming the curve of a jaw, the flick of wind in hair, the ripple of water. Time passes quietly, the only sound the light scratching of pencil on paper. Then there comes a knock, three quick taps at the front door.
