I cross the hallway, barefoot, breath short, throat dry.
I unlock the front door.
And she's there.

Leaning against the wall, a cigarette between her fingers. Dressed in black, as always. Her coat falls over her shoulders like armor.
Her eyes gleam in the night like two sharpened blades.
She says nothing. She doesn't smile. She looks at me. And I already feel my knees buckling.
She stubs her cigarette on the stone, straightens up slowly, then enters without a word. Without another glance.
