Jett was suddenly under my feet, wanting to leave with me. I grinned at Jett. "Grant, call him." "Jett, here boy." Grant whistled. Jett did as instructed and ran toward Grant. We were working on training him, but he was still a work in progress. Shutting the barn door, I examined my surroundings for threats before I made my way back to the house. I stiffened when something moved in the forest. With his gun hanging on his shoulder, Joey emerged from the trees with a crooked smile on his full lips. "It's just me."

I know he is already on his way. “Shame there is not more of you,” Joey murmurs. “Not even a handful. That is disappointing.” Zanthe roars in my head. ‘Now, Zahra!’ Joey tightens his grip. “Think you can take me? I could break you so easily. A runt like you never sees it coming. Maybe I should let a few rogues in next time and see how you really handle yourself.” That is it. I move. My head snaps back, smashing into his nose.

Now, though, it grates. Joey is the one who speaks to me. He hasn't been here very long, not long before Sierra got here, really, but he's confident and has training from...somewhere else, and we get along great. He's a good protector of Sierra. Happy to do his job without complaint. "You good, Alpha?" He asks, and I nod my head.

"Alright." Sierra agreed to Anna's request at once. "Then I won't bother you any longer." Joey stood up, still looking good and youthful as ever. "If you ever need any information, you can contact me anytime. I'll tell you everything I know." Anna did not respond. She knew very well that they were only using each other. Joey did not mind, however. He smiled and said goodbye. "Alright, I'm heading out now, Sierra." Sierra blinked.

Before he could say anything though, Joey walked back in. He had three bottles of beer in his hand. He handed one to Cale, one to me, and opened the third one for himself. Before I could take a sip of my beer, Cale spoke. “She’s not drinking that.” Joey raised his eyebrows, “Why?”, then he looked at me, “You don’t want it?” “No, she does not,” Cale said, using his Alpha voice. This was going to get ugly. “Okay, dude,” Joey said, and I could see that this was getting on his nerves now. Games aside, he didn’t like people who were arrogant. I took his hand in mine and squeezed it, trying to calm him down.

"Yeah, Lia is indeed famous. Why?" Joey giggled as his grip on his phone tightened. "You see, I really like her." I looked at him more clearly, and I saw how genuine his smile and every word he said was. "T-This might l-look obvious, b-but I was a nerd back in middle school." My forehead creased. What does Joey mean by obvious? It's not even evident with how vibrant he looks now. Although I don't judge nerds since I am one of them, I thought they were all gloomy like me. So there's still someone as bright and adorable as Joey.

Karen and Tres’s father shook hands and exchanged pleasantries. “Sup, James?” said Joey with a smirk. He punched his shoulder playfully. “Same old, same old. Missed you, bro.” Joey nodded. “Me too. So, you’re Tres?” the boy mistakenly asked Matt. Tres’s brother shook his head. “No, I’m actually cool. Four-eyes there is Tres.” “Shut up!” snapped Tres before turning to Joey. “How’s the tablet?” “Awesome,” the boy said, his eyes gazing far off into some unknown distance. “Thank you, for real.”

(Joey POV) I am going to be Beta of West Mountain Pack. Me. ME. Goddess, no matter how hard I worked the past few months, I never expected this. Nor did I think I deserved it. High school Joey was lazy, rude, and a bully. But now I am going to be Beta. Holy Goddess. If it wasn’t for the seriousness of the situation, I would be jumping up and down. But alas, I had a job to do.
