I still remember what he was like before…before I married Lucas, before I left home, before he sold me to Johnathan.
He wasn’t always a bad father.
Johnathan nods. “He is a good man, I agree. In the human world, Douglas Smith is unstoppable.”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” I mumble. “He’s good at what he does.”
Johnathan sighs and sinks to his haunches. He plucks a stray blade of grass that’s growing between the cracks of the pavement out of the ground and looks in the direction of the pack house. “I have to tell you now,” he says, his voice so soft that I almost don’t hear him.
