The light faltered. The gold thinned, then thickened, then thinned again, as if two hands pulled it from opposite sides. A thread of white ran through the flame. Not gold. Not red. A pale silver white like moonlight on ice. A murmur grew into voices. A child cried once and was hushed. Outside, bells that should have fallen silent kept ringing, as if they had forgotten how to stop. The silver grew brighter. It folded through the gold and softened it until the two colors lay side by side. The bowl sang a high note that set the candle flames trembling.

I always wondered why Silver had such a book since it had no particular aura to it. It was not even fortified, just a random notebook that looked scribbled by a child. “I always loved nature,” Silver touched the pages of the book with so much yearning and melancholy. “When I was eighteen, I got obsessed with nature, not just love. I would go out of my way and make a trip to forests, climb mountains, go cave diving and just document it.”

The child shifted, small fingers curling against the blanket, brow furrowing as though dreaming of something too large to fit inside sleep. Liora crossed the room instantly, sitting beside him, brushing her thumb gently across his temple. “Easy,” she whispered. “You’re safe.” Silver’s eyes fluttered open. They were silver—not glowing, not ancient—just his. Confused. Sleep-heavy. Still unmistakably a child.
