Joshua said, his voice low, filled with a sudden, sharp clarity.
He stood up, his movements fluid despite the burden he carried. He walked to the center of the porch, looking out over the mountain.
"Are you ready?" Richard asked, stepping up beside him.
"I’ve been ready for a thousand years," Joshua said, his eyes reflecting the pale moonlight.
The heart began to hammer, faster now, a frenetic, desperate sound that echoed through the mountain. The ground beneath them glowed, the obsidian stone turning into a web of silver light that pulsed in time with the baby's movements.
