But he merely stared at her, that same hard, questioning look — as if trying to peel away the layers and read the book written on her flesh.
"You gave me a book last time," he said softly. "I read it."
Lena's heart skipped.
"You. did?"
He nodded once, deliberately slow.
"It was about mourning," he told her. His voice was rough, like stone rubbed against gravel. "About trying to stay alive after having everything taken away."
Lena swallowed hard.
"I thought. I thought you might get it," she breathed.
Julian took a step in, into the space between.
"I did."
For an instant, everything narrowed to the two of them, the hum of customers fading into nothing.
