But she crossed the line.” Penelope’s hands balled into fists in her lap. “She’s going to pay tonight.” The car turned into a darker road, the trees brushing past the windows. Poppy's eyes darted around, her hands clenched into her dress. She didn’t know where they were going. She didn’t know what they meant.

Hunter throws the unicorn into the air, letting it fall to the ground, and raises his hand to the High Five that Penelope offers. I don't know if I get more upset that Hunter gave me a gift and spent the rest of his time throwing it on the floor, identical to a bored child, or because he was forced to agree with Penelope. "Certainly" I inhale deeply and lift my hair in a bun. "I think I need to sleep. I can't stand so much in a single day.” Penelope says goodbye with a kiss on my face and another on Hunter's face, opening the door, she stops with her hand on the handle and half her body inside the room.

I swallowed hard at the look Xander was giving me. “You’re not staying?” Alec suddenly asked. I hesitated, smiled a bit, and shook my head. “No, I'm tired.” He nodded. Then Penelope suddenly approached and put her arm around me. I looked at her, confused. “She can’t stay anymore, her baby boy will be looking for her. He’s strict and possessive. Right, Girl?” She turned to me with a mischievous grin. Jeez! Now I get why her voice got louder earlier—she knew Xander was behind me! She's really something!

Jacklyn stood there, finding it more and more odd how concerned Penelope was. Wasn't she paying a little too much attention to Lucy? With a narrowed gaze, Jacklyn walked over to Penelope and asked, curious, "Penelope, why have I never seen you care this much about any other kid?" Penelope always got flustered around Jacklyn. She looked away, avoiding her gaze as she answered, "I just think Lucy's really cute. Besides, can't I just like little girls?"
