“ I teased with a choked laugh and he grinned at the sound like it was the only thing he’d wanted from me all morning. We climbed the small rise before the wall and entered the room where the letter was kept, including the one sent to Kieran. Jake pointed with his chin. “There.” At the top of a flat stone, it was laid with that strange mark as a signature, the same mark found on the wall of our border this morning. My skin prickled. “Jake drew a little closer without making a thing of it, blocking the worst of it with his body. “Why do they put their sign where we can see?” I asked. “Why mark a world you intend to ruin?”

The little kid looked up and around and pointed at the Flag with a Shark sign “Near this sign, okay?” Dana smiled and nodded. ‘Looks like she made a little friend!’

The weather is not at its best and the day grows colder, but the sun shines from out of nowhere, lending a bit of warmth. Later we have lunch on some kind of Jurassic Park Island. The setting is dark and full of lights and replicas of the great historical animals. We order hamburgers for lunch so we don't have to eat again for a long time again. He looks delighted to see me chomping such a giant hamburger, even though I know my mouth is a mess, smeared with ketchup sauce.

The next day, a little after 11 a.m., Eddie stood at the arrival gate holding a large, garish sign. Hazel, wearing sunglasses and a mask, stood beside him, her face completely concealed. After all, Eddie’s sign was the epitome of humiliation. It screamed, 'Welcome Home, Lord Xander and Lady Sully, Rulers of the Kingdom of Awesome!' in glittery neon pink, complete with a couple of misspelled words and stick figures holding hands under a lopsided rainbow. To top it off, Eddie had drawn a crown on Xander’s head and a tiara on Sully’s—with an unfortunate resemblance to a UFO.

I grabbed four of those and a couple of thermal cups. After paying for my purchases and arranging delivery of all of my furniture, we decided to go to the aquariums and wildlife museum. We approached the entrance and I saw a huge sign that read, “Wonders of Wildlife” and I got so excited. I smiled, “I have heard so many good things about this place.” Joshua laughed, “You are going to love it.”

“How about a ‘Dino Dig’ where kids can dig for plastic dinosaur bones in a sandbox? Or a ‘Dino Egg Hunt’ with eggs filled with small toys or treats?” Celine clapped her hands together, clearly thrilled. “Connor would love that! He’s always been fascinated by dinosaurs and archeology. What about decorations?” Irene pointed to a set of vibrant, prehistoric-themed decorations in the folder. “We could have dinosaur balloons, banners with jungle vines, and a ‘Welcome to the Dinosaur Park’ sign at the entrance. We could also use dinosaur footprints to lead the way to the party area.”

Jonah groaned as they rounded a street corner. Claire was too busy studying everything to keep up with their banter. A symbol on a sign caught her eye. It was an R but the ends swirled up, it was fresh and burned onto the sign of the little shop. She looked around at the other signs and random ones throughout the street seem to have them on it. She thought that it was strange and wondered what it meant. Jack stopped infront of a tavern, it was the color fo the moss growing on the out side of it. Claire glanced up to the sign. Shark bait was engraved on a copper metal and here two was another one of those R’s.

It wormed its way into the spaces between my ribs, cloying and too sweet, every wrong note scraping along my nerves. Above us, the pale sky rippled. Words burned into existence in jagged, flickering letters, hanging over the boardwalk like a broken neon marquee: \[ESCAPE THE CARNIVAL BEFORE THE TIDE RISES.\] Beneath it, in smaller, pulsing scripts: \[BEWARE: THE DEAD WANT TO PLAY.\] “Well, that’s not ominous at all,” Jax muttered, stepping up beside me. The boards creaked uneasily under his added weight. “Do we get a prize if we make it out? Giant stuffed eldritch horror? Goldfish that’s secretly a mimic?”

His fingers laced through mine instantly, holding tight. We fell asleep like that, hands linked, while down the hall, in the study, Silas and Rowan pored over the ancient journals under a single lamp. They found a page near the end, a sketch drawn in hurried, desperate lines. It was a symbol—a circle with a stylized white wolf inside, and around it, the sharp, angular markings of a corporate logo. Beneath it, their father had written just two words, the ink blotted as if his hand had been shaking.
