Rion's POV “Please….. please have mercy on me. I can't— I can't take it anymore. I've realized my mistake, just please don't hurt me anymore. You can keep me locked up for as long as you want but please stop this. It hurts so bad, I can't take it. Please, I'm begging you.” He pleads pathetically, crying nonstop. If I had a heart, perhaps I would have felt something. Maybe I could have grasped the concept of mercy and forgiveness but you see, my heart is dead.

“Wayne, I was wrong! I’ll never lie to you again. I can’t lose my legs! “I’m sorry! I’ll apologize to you and to Jocelyn. Fine, I’ll give the house back to her. Please, let me go! I’ll leave the country immediately and behave myself. I won’t embarrass myself in front of you again! “Wayne, please let me go. I…” The truck drew closer and closer. Her pleas were swallowed by the deafening roar as black tires crushed down on her legs. All that remained were screams that tore through the sky. “Ahh! My legs! My legs!”

“Pull the trigger. End it. You have a choice too.” “So you're that hungry for death?” “I deserve it.” A bitter laugh escaped me. “You think that’s justice?” “No.” His voice didn’t shake.“I think It’s mercy.” I pressed harder. “And you think I’m here to give you mercy?” “I just think you’ve been waiting for this,” he said. “So just do it and put me out of my misery” My jaw clenched and the weight of the gun made my hand tremble. I could end him with just one pull. In a matter of seconds, his blood could be on the floor and balance be restored. But something in his eyes stopped me.

“Give me the punishment. I’ll take it. Let me go to the bathroom. Please… please. Hic, please, hic, please.” I was begging. I didn’t want to defecate on the man’s hand. Earlier, I had barely managed to urinate in the corner of the room after holding it in. I didn’t want to do anything filthier. There was such a thing as human dignity. No matter how extreme the situation, I wanted to hold onto that at least. The man clicked his tongue as if it were a shame and pulled his hand out. Then he picked me up in one swoop.

“Perfect. One more. Mercy is weakness.” “Please...” “Mercy. Is. Weakness.” I look at them bleeding, crying, staring at me like I’m their last hope. “Mercy is weakness,” I whisper. “Louder.” “Mercy is weakness.” “LOUDER!” “MERCY IS WEAKNESS!” The shout tears out of me and something inside me just… snaps. He smiles like I finally passed the test.

The predatory gleam in them made goosebumps rise on my skin with fear. When he didn't say anything, I continued, "I'm begging you, Lorenzo, please have mercy on Jack, Mama, and Anthony. I'm the one responsible for betraying you and I'm the one who deserves to be punished, not them. So, do whatever you want to me - torture me, hit me - but don't involve the innocent ones in this. Take my life in their stead, please. I'm pleading with you, Lorenzo, show mercy on them."

“Son… I suggest you see the cardinal or the Bishop. Or better still, get a therapist. I can recommend if you lack one.” I nod, the blade itching in my boot. “Therapist? What of mercy, Father? Can’t I have mercy, a new beginning, just like the others? I thought the scriptures said for every soul that is won to Christ, the kingdom of heaven rejoices. What changed?” “The justice system!” Gloria, the adulterer, snaps. “How dare you desecrate this place? How dare you say mercy? You should be behind bars, you heathen!””

“I could have asked for prison time for you too. But I didn’t. Because I don’t believe you would have gone this far on your own. Louis used you. And I won’t let his poison ruin more lives.” His eyes widened. “You… you’re not making me pay the charges?” I shook my head. “Keep your money. Just stay away from us. Build your life back without dragging anyone else down.” His voice broke. “Thank you, Xavier. I don’t deserve this, but… thank you.” I left him there, feeling strangely lighter. Mercy was a strange thing. It didn’t erase the pain of the past, but it stopped it from spreading further. When I got home, Melissa was waiting for me.
