This was restraint. Behind her, the room was dim, lit only by the low hearth fire that cracked softly, more sound than warmth. She had not moved from the window since the villagers left. Every breath felt measured, as if her chest no longer trusted itself to expand fully. Mercy had worked. That was the cruelest part. If it had failed outright, the cost would have been simpler. Blood demanded response. Violence justified escalation. But mercy had paused the blade, and in doing so, it had made everything that followed more complicated.

Because deploying it would have required her to be smaller than she currently was. Revenge was a closed loop. She was not a closed loop. Liam crouched down, tilting the blade so the man could see his own terrified reflection. “You know I wish I could have mercy ,” Liam whispered coldly. “But mercy doesn’t exist in my world.” With one swift motion, the blade sliced through flesh and bone. The man’s scream was cut short as his head rolled to the floor, thudding heavily before landing sideways, his lifeless eyes still frozen in terror.

And still I held back, shaking, my teeth hovering at her throat, knowing that one heartbeat more would damn us both. Somewhere, in a softer part of the world, a siren complained about a different man’s mistake. The sound dragged a thread through my hearing that caught on a nail of memory: the boy in the alley the night before, the way his breath had paused when mine continued, the way my mouth had refused to stop until my will had arrived late. I have learned too many sermons to pretend I don’t know the text of this one. Mercy is not nice. Mercy is breaking yourself where it matters to save someone else’s music.
