His collar was high, buttoned tight to the throat, completely covering the stitches on his neck. His hair was brushed back, and his face carried the flat, unreadable expression he used with his men. He stopped two feet from the bed. I stood up, keeping my hands at my sides. His eyes flicked down to my mouth, held there for a second, then shifted to the window. The line of his jaw tightened.

Tonight I would have to smile for the lenses that were meant to destroy me. Late the next evening Varek called Kael and Draven to the study while I was clearing the dinner plates.
