Kael caught the opening and used it to hook her staff, spin her off‑balance, and send her to the ground in a smooth, clean motion that ended with the tip of his blunt‑edged sword at her throat.
She lay there, panting, grinning up at him. “All right,” she said. “The legends are only slightly exaggerated.”
He stepped back, offering her a hand up. She took it, and when she stood, she patted his chest once, right over his heart.
“Next time,” she said, “we go full speed.”
“We’ll see,” he said.
Rin’s wolf’s hackles were up.
*Ridiculous,* Rin told herself. *You’ve kissed him. You’ve done far more than that. You don’t get to be mad about a pat on the chest.*
