Nune’s lips curled in irritation as she muttered, “Don’t ever say that again.” Maria couldn’t help but notice the rings on each of the women’s left ring fingers. It was subtle, but it was there. They were all married to men with power, and it made her wonder just how deep their connections ran. The five women settled in, the air thick with unspoken stories. Alexei gestured for introductions. “Let’s catch Maria up,” she said, her tone light. An incoming picture message from the unknown sender illuminated the screen. My shaking fingers tapped the notification. The image loaded slowly. It was a high-resolution scan of an old, yellowed hospital birth certificate from Westbridge Memorial. At the top of the document, the mother’s name was listed as ELENA HAYES. In the middle of the page, under the section for twin births, were two official hospital identification numbers. Beside the first number was a black-and-white footprint stamp labeled: BABY A — DAMON HAYES. Beside the second number, stamped in dark red ink, was a footprint labeled: BABY B — ADRIAN CARTER.

She showed no remorse, what so ever. "Why, Maria?...After I told you no....you do this anyways? What are you? My wife or your Uncle's niece?" I shouted. "Both". Maria answered. I shook my head. " Your my wife, Maria...an Archangel....you are the wife of a Capo and I told you no....Your Uncle may be Capo of the Commission, but he's not your Capo. My orders are what you follow." I pushed her.
