I had given everyone the evening off because of the weather.
And now the house felt like a dark, empty shell.
The flashlight flickered again. Then went out. Completely.
Kate screamed.
Before I could react, she crashed into my front this time, arms wrapping around my torso, her face pressed against my chest.
“Kate,” I said, steady.
“Yes, Mr. Reid,” she answered immediately, tightening her hold.
I stood very still.
Her entire body was against mine now. From shoulders to hips.
And she was shaking. The fear was real. But so was the problem.
