That look alone keeps her mouth shut, though the tension settles deeper into her spine. “So,” Kayla goes on, drifting toward the display shelf without invitation, “are these all family photos?” Mrs. Ericson inhales quietly through her nose as Kayla picks up a frame, her fingers tightening slightly where they are clasped. “Yes,” she says evenly. “They are.” “Oh my God,” Kayla laughs softly. “This must be Jim as a kid. Look at those cheeks.” She tilts the frame toward Jim, chuckling, entirely unaware—or unconcerned—about the tension thickening around her.

Kay leaned against the bedpost and folded her hands in front of her chest. The servant turns around and displays Lauretta's shocked face. "You shocked me, Kay." The woman with the unique eyes couldn't help but laugh. Kay sat on the edge of the bed and grabbed her phone back. Despite wearing a fake face and wig, Kay was still able to recognize Kyra through her sister's posture. "Tell me what you're looking for on my phone, Hm?" asked Kay staring intently at her sister. Kyra sits next to Kay and lays her body on the bed. "I just want to see a picture of you with your new boyfriend."

I lean my cheek against her silky hair and snap a pic then show her. Ainsley taught me that. Never post a girl’s pic until she makes sure she isn’t ‘fugly’ first. Ainsley’s words. Not mine. I’ve never seen a fugly picture of Ainsley. I can’t imagine Kayla could have a fugly picture either. “We’re pretty cute together.” She giggles. “You’re cool with it?” I send her the photo and save it as my lock screen. “There. Now I get to see you whenever I want.”

The top two are as expected…keys, pens, cigarettes…but the bottom drawer, as soon as I pull on the handle I feel the heaviness…the safe that I had been looking for. Not wasting any valuable time, I key in the code keeping an eye on Kaia outside who was now trailing her finger along a side-table inspecting the amount of dust..which had been added to by the smoke bombs. Opening the safe I reach down to find a number of files…one titled The White Wolf. My breath catches in the back of my throat as I quickly flick through the papers to find pictures of Kaia from before her accident, standing on the cliff top, walking with Beckett..and even pictures of her and Alora.

I instructed, handing Khalid the phone. He arched an eyebrow but started swiping through the images. “Yes. I remember this girl.” Khalid pointed to a picture of Maureen, one of the foster daughters of the Tracey family. “She’s cute… for a wolf.” he shrugged. I rolled my eyes. “Keep scrolling. Do you see the male?” I asked. He swiped past the pictures of Scott and Tanner before stopping. “Yes… that’s him.” he said, handing me the phone back.

"Let's talk about you instead. How's your SD? Any pictures?" Ashley's interest was piqued by the new subject. Turning, she turned her attention to Kaylee, waiting for her to spill the tea. Kaylee seeing her friend's interest pulled out her phone. A few swipes and a picture popped up. An old man in his fifties wearing nothing by some shorts smiled in the picture. A pouting Kaylee hung clung to his arm as she lay on his hairy chest. "He looks better than your last. No brown teeth this time," Kenna pointed out.

Curiosity, that insidious little gremlin, took hold, and she reached for the album. The pages were filled with pictures of Liam at different stages of his life: a cherubic toddler with a gap-toothed grin, a gangly teenager with a mop of unruly hair, a confident young man graduating from college. Kayla found herself smiling, surprised by the warmth that spread through her chest. These were the unguarded moments, the glimpses of the real Liam, the one he kept hidden from the world. And then she saw it. A faded photograph, tucked between two pages, almost like a secret. It was a picture of her.

Adelaide let her eyes move over the people that filled the pristine white space as their eyes all turned to look to her. Familiar faces stood out from the crowd next to Theo and she quickly made her way over. The tall female was dressed in traditional wear that stood out from the crowd that had gathered and her hair was auburn and long, reaching to her lower back. Her eyes were blue and wild, full of the wolf that lounged beneath her skin. The wilderness clung to her skin and was a drug to her senses, like a song pulling her back to the true nature of their kind.

There'd been blood. Felecia pulled another picture then another from the boxes. Only a few included the woman-Karen. Most were of the boy. He had dark curling hair, a chubby face and dark eyes that always seemed to be lit up with a smile. "Felecia?" Kelsey said slowly. "Evan, get up here. I don't do feelings and our girl looks like she's about to have a lot of them." Felecia began pulling pictures out from farther back. It took her roughly thirty photographs to find one of just her mother.

Katie exclaimed, “But that will be six years from now, Kyle. Are you sure you can wait that long?” “I am not sure, Katie, but I am determined to wait because Camila deserves that. What I need now is a distraction.” Katie smiled sheepishly. “I think I have the perfect distraction for you, Kyle Anthony Flockhart.” From her sheepish smile and the mischievous glints in her eyes, I could already tell I wouldn’t like what she was about to say.
