You know that heaviness you feel after your first shift, I feel that way right now.”

Gravity must be ten times the normal because I couldn't even lift my arms up. My whole back felt like they were hammered by a baseball bat a hundred times over. The only difference is I don't have crushed bones, but it felt like it. Well, not really. I've never been hammered by a bat before. I stared at the ceiling as two of my bunkmates entered.

I reached for it, intending to turn it off completely, but my hand missed. Everything felt wrong suddenly, my body felt too heavy, my thoughts became too slow, like I was moving through syrup. The headache intensified, blinding white pain lancing through my temples, and I fell back against the pillow, unable to hold myself upright. Something was wrong, really wrong, but I couldn't organize my thoughts enough to figure out what.

With one tremendous effort, I pushed myself up from the bed. My legs felt wobbly and staggering beneath me, my head feeling like the weight of a dumbbell. A migraine throbbed at the back of my skull, as if numerous construction workers were digging into my head. Unable to keep me afloat, my legs buckled to the floor and I fell with a slightly loud thud. I groaned to myself and breathed in deeply, unwilling to give up in my endeavour. Why do I feel so weak? I was literally panting my lungs out like I had ran a marathon.

After dinner, we slowly made our way out of the dining room. Kai never let go of me, not even for a second. His arm stayed wrapped around my waist like he was afraid I’d disappear if he let go. I was full and sleepy, and my body felt heavier than usual. My legs ached a little, and my lower back was starting to hurt too. That happened a lot lately—being almost six months pregnant came with a lot of surprises. Kai kept glancing down at me, his eyes filled with worry, but I gave him a small smile to let him know I was okay.
