Fated Mate

Nyx pov

Is there a limit to the weird things that can happen to me? Moon goddess, just give me a break already. Something about this man sends chills down my skin, and I'm not about to stand here and find out what that is. I dust off my soiled dress and turn to leave.

"Who touched you?" His deep baritone voice hits me like a shockwave, freezing me in place.

I can feel those gold eyes on me like a physical weight, patient and unblinking, as if he has all the time in the world and fully expects me to fill the silence. I would, on any other day. I would have tripped over my own words trying to explain myself to someone who looked like that.

But it's getting dark fast, and I need to find my way home. Not that my stepmother is particularly eager to welcome me back, but it's either that or sleep on the street. Bad things happened to girls who weren't home before dark in Nightclaw territory. Especially human girls.

"I have to go," I say, brushing the dirt off my skirt again and ignoring the way my legs still feel unsteady. I don't look at him. Looking at him feels dangerous in a way I can't name, like standing too close to a fire that has no business burning that bright.

I walk past him yet he didn't move. Good. At least I can find my way back without someone following me.

I cut through the trees in the direction I pray leads back to my backpack, my skin prickling the entire time, half expecting a hand to close around my arm the way Cullen's always does. It never comes.

The tree line thins. The school fence appears through the gaps. I finally let myself breathe. My generous stepbrother didn't touch my backpack. By the time I reach my bike, the entire school grounds are empty. At least I can ride home in peace.

Kyrell

Third person

Kyrell doesn't move from his position. He stands exactly where she left him, in the middle of the forest, like there's a land mine beneath his feet. Not because he can't move, but because he knows that if he takes one step in her direction, he can't trust what comes after it.

He clenches his jaw until it aches. His claws digs into his palms, drawing blood. Lycans don't shift the way werewolves do on a full moon. They shift at will. And right now, his beast is pulling at him. Furious with him.

*Go after her.* His beast said in his head.

*I can't.*

*Why? She's ours. I want her now.*

*She isn't ours. Yet.*

*Then why did we track her here if you didn't want to mark her?*

Honestly, he doesn't know how to answer that. He came to the Nightclaw pack to secure the Alpha's daughter for the Crimson Hunt, but his wolf has been restless ever since. The Hunt is less than a week away, and he has already found his mate, only for her to turn out to be his worst nightmare.

He had gone into the forest for a run to quiet his wolf. Then a scent stopped him cold. He traced it to behind the school, his eyes landing on a petite figure crumpled on the ground. He was in his lycan form but fully aware, and his beast had gone ravenous watching her get bullied. If he hadn't turned and forced himself back into the trees, he would have slit every throat in sight. He may be heartless, but killing children isn't how he shows it.

She smelled like earth after rain, and something older underneath, something dark and sweet with no name he could reach for.

And then she had walked straight into his chest.

He exhales slowly through his nose. A mistake. Her scent still clings to the air around him like she never left.

His wolf pushes at him, restless and insistent.

*Follow.* His wolf groans.

He doesn't. His wolf doesn't understand how much is at stake. His pack's future depends on him choosing the right Luna. His father would never allow him to claim any female without Alpha or Beta blood.

There was no wolf scent on her, which means she's either wolfless or human. But every person connected to a pack carried that trace, even humans raised among wolves. Faint, but always present.

On her, nothing. Which angers him more than it should. She can't even feel the mate bond.

He shifts to his lycan form and cuts deeper into the forest

until the Alpha's pack house comes into view.

"Prince Kyrell, I.."

"Get my beta." Kyrell cuts Alpha Gerald off without breaking stride. He walks into the pack house like he owns it. Gerald nods and signals one of the men at the door.

The guest room prepared for him feels suffocating despite the air conditioning and open ventilation. He stands at the window, staring at nothing.

"Come in, Samiel," he said, before his beta can knock.

"You've been out a long time," Samiel said, shutting the door behind him. He crosses the room and comes to stand beside Kyrell at the window. Kyrell doesn't turn to face him. After a stretch of silence, he moves to sit on the sofa near the bed. "We leave tomorrow."

Samiel's brow furrows. "But your father said.."

"I know."

Samiel steps in front of him. "We can't leave without the Alpha female. You know how difficult your father can be. Going back without Alpha Gerald's daughter won't sit well with him."

Kyrell isn't sure if he should tell Samiel his reason for wanting to leave. He had thought finding his mate would be the one thing that saves him, proof he wouldn't have to claim Vesper or any other Alpha female who wasn't his true match. But finding her today feels less like salvation and more like a curse made flesh.

Samiel continues, unaware of the silent war Kyrell is losing. "We need a strong Luna fit to carry the Lycan bloodline. Even if by some miracle you find your fated mate, what if she isn't strong enough? What if your father rejects her? What if the pack does?"

"We leave tomorrow," Kyrell says. "And as for Vesper, send someone to pick her up before the Crimson Hunt." He needs to leave this place before that scent drives him feral.

*You can't leave without her.*

Before his wolf can pull at him again, Kyrell shuts him into the darkest corner of his mind and leaves him there.

NyxFor a moment, neither of us moved. He stood by his car, gray eyes fixed on me, and for one foolish second I let myself believe he was happy to see me. I started to move towards him, but then his expression shuttered, and whatever warmth I'd imagined disappeared like it was never there.Still, against every nerve in my system, I didn't stop until I was a few feet from him. "Dad." The word felt strange in my mouth, like I was learning a new language. He didn't answer, instead doing a terrible job of trying to control his facial expression, which shifted from shock to anger. If I didn't know better, I would have thought he was nervous."How are you doing, Dad?" My voice cracked. I held the file tighter, hoping it wouldn't rip while I waited for his answer. When he did, disappointment hit me more than I expected."What are you doing here?" His voice was as I remembered, cold. I tried not to let it bother me."I go here now. Well, I will, if I get everything sorted." I couldn't stop my

Nyx The room felt too small, like a ribcage closing in. It was as if the oxygen was being sucked out of the room, and all I could feel was the heat radiating from Kyrell's body. I quickly moved away from him, putting enough distance between us. I stared at him, disgusted with myself. "You're disgusting." I spat, folding my arms on my chest. Slowly, he turned to face me. "Says the one responding to my touch." There was a hint of amusement in his voice, that infuriated me more. I could make out the slight smirk on his features despite the dimly lit room. "Oh yeah? I wasn't the one seeking validation to prove I'm a good kisser." I probably sounded childish, but I didn't care about that now. Kyrell stood there for some time, his expression back to stone before walking towards the door. "My driver would take you to Crescent in the morning." He twisted the door handle and halted his movement. "I don't need your help." I gritted before he could step outside. I refused to let him b

NyxI guess my life wasn't so shitty after all. The scholarship was the only good thing to come out of this whole mess, even if the messenger was my brother.Cullen must have seen the war on my face because he added, "Admission ends in two days." He said gleefully. Two days? At least I had enough time to prepare myself. I still didn't know what I needed preparations for. This was my only chance of actually getting the hell out of here."No." The word came out steadier than I felt. "I'm not going anywhere with you."His smirk faltered, just for a second, and I savored it more than I should have. I turned and walked out of the garden before he could recover enough to argue, my legs carrying me faster than my mind could keep up.I had a bond I still needed to sever, and I didn't know how to go about it. Maybe rejecting his offer would make him give up. Who was I kidding? Cullen never knew when to give up. At least I got the information, time to put it to good use.I'd be a fool to follow

  • Rejected and Marked by the Lycan Prince    Make a choice

NyxIt took me faster than I expected to understand what Vesper just said. However, before I could reply to her, she spun on her heel and walked towards the stairs, leaving me to deal with the impending weight of Alpha Gerald's rage. After a moment I snapped out of it. I needed to get my life back together by actually getting the fuck out of here. That meant finding a way to sever this bond. However impossible that might be. And what better place to search for impossible knowledge if not a library?I started walking, searching for any room with books in it. After walking for about ten minutes, I still couldn't find the library. Did the packhouse even have one? The feeling of frustration burned the soles of my feet as I traced my steps back downstairs.I was about to go to the kitchen and ask the nice omegas for directions when a strong pull tugged me towards the back door. Like an ancient yearning that felt oddly familiar.I didn't know where it led, but I found myself moving towards

  • Rejected and Marked by the Lycan Prince    His amusement

Third personKyrell's hand tightened around Cullen's throat, and all he could think of was finishing it. To feel the exact second life left the body dangling from his fist. The bastard before him had the guts to lay his hands on her. Ignoring the way his mind was currently being invaded by both his luna and beta, he focused on the task at hand. After crossing his border in search of Nyx he ordered his warriors to keep an eye out for him. He knew Cullen would definitely be back to finish what he started, but he didn't expect it to be this soon.Cullen's eyes locked onto his, and behind the fake struggle there was something else. Something Kyrell recognized immediately. Amusement.Cullen knew that the Lycan alpha regretted not killing him when he had the chance. He knew the killing intent he was doing a good job of controlling was all because of his little sister. He'd known the moment Kyrell descended those stairs that this was how it would end. How he wanted it to go. Due to his beta

NyxCullen?I released a sigh I never realized hung in my chest. Mira ran towards him and held his face with both hands. The warriors didn't stop her, they just let go of him and turned to leave. Before he could crash on the floor, Mira held him by the waist."What happened to you?" She gasped. The pain in her eyes made my heart clench. She kept whispering words to him, and slowly, his eyes blinked open. I didn't know if I should go to her or leave her alone. Either way, tension was already bubbling in my chest."Who did this to you?" She asked. This time her voice held more weight. Cullen opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. The injuries on his body weren't from Kyrell's punches, they were fresh wounds. He was healing slowly, which is surprising for a beta."I can't believe they injected you with wolfsbane." Mira snarled. Wolfsbane? Cullen slowly lifted his head to scan the room, and when his eyes found mine, something flashed across them. Before I could tell what it was,
