She was covered in a layer of black, crystalline frost that felt harder than diamond.
She was still breathing, but the air she exhaled was a cloud of dry ice. Her heart had stopped beating in a human rhythm; it was now a slow, tectonic vibration that occurred once an hour.
The elevator doors on the roof hissed open. Kael burst out, his clothes torn, his body covered in scars. He saw her.
"Elara?" he whispered, his voice trembling.
He ran to her, his warm hands reaching out to grab her shoulders. But the moment his skin touched the frost on her dress, he let out a cry of pain. The cold was so absolute it burned.
